The Department of State Security Services (DSS) and the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) have collaborated to develop high-tech security equipment.
This was revealed by NASENI’s executive vice chairman and chief executive officer, Khalil Halilu, on Thursday, in Abuja.
He described the development as a significant step towards achieving technological self-reliance in Nigeria’s security sector.
Speaking at a briefing in Abuja, Halilu said the advanced security equipment, jointly developed with the DSS and with full support from the president, would enhance intelligence gathering and improve national security coverage.
“A state-of-the-art manufacturing facility jointly constructed with the DSS in Abuja is fully equipped with the latest security systems and technology that will transform security operations nationwide,” Halilu said.
He added that the DSS Director-General, Oluwatosin Ajayi, has consistently emphasised the president’s vision of promoting self-reliance among security agencies and reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported security equipment.
Halilu explained that both agencies had trained and developed technical expertise in manufacturing the equipment, though specific details could not be disclosed for security reasons.
He says, “The president firmly believes Nigeria can manufacture its own security equipment and should minimise reliance on imports. This strategic partnership leverages NASENI’s scientific and engineering expertise to enhance research and innovation tailored specifically to the needs of the security sector.”
Halilu added that the project’s success would soon position Nigeria as a regional leader in security technology manufacturing in West Africa, with positive implications for regional stability and economic growth.
