The Nigeria women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, are leaving no stone unturned in their quest for global glory, significantly upgrading their 2026 United States tour with the addition of a high-profile preseason showdown against the WNBA’s Indiana Fever.

The matchup, confirmed jointly by the Nigeria Basketball Federation and the Fever on Thursday, is set for May 2, 2026, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The game represents the third and most anticipated fixture of what is shaping up to be a historic tour for the African champions as they ramp up preparations for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin.

The announcement, which sent waves through Nigerian basketball circles, was made by D’Tigress on their official X account. The team’s post emphasised the escalating ambition of their U.S. tour, framing the Indianapolis game as the latest in a growing list of elite challenges.

“We weren’t done. First San Diego. Then Kansas City. Now Indianapolis,” the post read. “D’Tigress vs Indiana Fever, 05.02.26, 7PM EST, Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The tour continues.”

The Indiana Fever confirmed the development on their official website, framing the contest as a unique and competitive element of their own preseason preparations.

The organisation acknowledged the rising stature of Nigerian basketball, noting that facing a top-tier international squad would provide valuable reps ahead of the WNBA regular season.

This latest fixture expands a tour itinerary that already featured a pair of groundbreaking games. D’Tigress are scheduled to begin their American campaign on April 25 in San Diego, where they will face the Los Angeles Sparks.

That game is being hailed as a historic milestone, marking the first time an African national team will share the court with a WNBA franchise. The team will then travel to Kansas City for a second exhibition against the Minnesota Lynx on April 27, setting the stage for the finale against the Fever.

The addition of the Indiana Fever adds a distinct layer of intrigue to the tour. The Fever, who hold the top pick in the upcoming WNBA draft, are expected to feature a roster brimming with young talent, including superstar guard Caitlin Clark, making the matchup a major box-office draw and a litmus test for the Nigerian defense.

The expanding schedule reflects a deliberate strategy by the Nigeria Basketball Federation to expose the team to the highest level of opposition. With the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup scheduled for September 4 to 13 in Berlin, the federation views these high-stakes exhibition games as critical to sharpening the team’s competitiveness against the world’s best.

Currently ranked eighth in the world, D’Tigress enter the tour with a target on their backs as the reigning African champions. They secured a record-extending fifth consecutive AfroBasket title in 2025, a feat that not only cemented their continental dominance but also guaranteed their ticket to the World Cup.

While the team experienced mixed results during the global qualifying series in March notably securing wins over Colombia and the Philippines but falling to powerhouses South Korea, France, and Germany—coaching staff have emphasized that those outings were primarily experimental, focused on evaluating rotations and depth rather than results.

The upcoming U.S. tour, by contrast, is viewed as the real beginning of their final preparations for Berlin.

Spanning three cities and featuring three distinct WNBA opponents, the tour offers D’Tigress a rare and invaluable opportunity to test their mettle against the pinnacle of women’s professional basketball.

For a team aiming to not only compete but medal at the World Cup, these games against the Sparks, Lynx, and Fever are expected to provide the physical and tactical benchmarks necessary to elevate their game on the world stage.
