€200m Funding: Nigeria, EU Unveil 990kwp Mini-grid In Niger

The federal government has unveiled a 990kWp solar hybrid mini-grid, electrifying the Lambata community in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State.

The project, worth €9.3 million, was funded by the European Union (EU) and co-financed by the German government with collaboration with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).

This is as the European Union reaffirmed its commitment to investing in Nigeria’s power sector, focusing on renewable energy resources. With investments totaling over €200 million, the EU aims to facilitate innovative partnerships between the private and public sectors.

Speaking at the commissioning on Wednesday, Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding renewable energy solutions to underserved communities.

“The project features 990kWp photovoltaic panels, a 900kW battery storage system, and an advanced energy management system to ensure a stable solar electricity supply. This is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution that reduces reliance on fossil fuels while promoting a greener future,” he said.

“For households, it means better access to lighting, improved educational opportunities for children, and a healthier environment free from the dangers of kerosene.

“For local businesses, it signifies the ability to operate for longer hours, boosting productivity and income. The benefits will be felt across the community and beyond, as access to reliable electricity fosters growth, increases opportunities, and encourages entrepreneurship,” he added.

The Managing Director of REA, Abba Aliyu, highlighted the importance of the project, stating that it aligns with Nigeria’s goal of achieving sustainable and decentralised power solutions.

“This project is funded by the European Union and co-financed by the German government. A total of €9.3 million was provided for this initiative,” he said.

Aliyu also noted that Lambata is the second of 11 communities benefiting from the Interconnected Mini-Grid Acceleration Scheme (IMAS), which aims to enhance power reliability in underserved areas.

He expressed gratitude to the European Union and the German government for their financial and technical support in making the project a reality.

Aliyu further revealed that the government is planning additional interconnected mini-grid projects to expand electricity access across the country.

“We are working on deploying another 40 interconnected mini-grids in collaboration with seven distribution companies. Furthermore, discussions are underway for an additional $200 million in financing to develop 100 more mini-grids, which will provide electricity to over 1.83 million Nigerians,” he added.

Aliyu also noted that the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC)’s involvement has been key in integrating this mini-grid into the wider grid infrastructure, ensuring seamless connectivity and enabling future scaling efforts. “AEDC’s role in maintaining the grid and ensuring long-term sustainability cannot be overstated.

“This partnership between the developer, AEDC, and REA is a perfect example of how collaboration between the private sector, government, and local utilities can drive meaningful change in energy access.

The European Union’s head of Delegation in Nigeria,  Massimo De Luca, reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s transition to clean and reliable energy solutions.

De Luca stressed the EU’s substantial investment of approximately €200 million in Nigeria’s energy sector, indicating readiness for further investment to enhance power generation and distribution.

He emphasised the importance of the new mini-grid energy project, which represents a culmination of regulatory efforts and partnerships between the EU, Nigerian authorities, and private investors.

The governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umaru Bago, represented by the Commissioner for Power, Bashiru Lokogoma, commended the initiative, noting that reliable electricity would stimulate economic growth, improve education, and enhance healthcare services in Lambata and beyond.

“We are not just inaugurating a project but witnessing the beginning of a new chapter for Lambata, a community where reliable and sustainable energy will transform lives.

“This project is a testament to what can be achieved when we come together, share resources, and align goals for the common good.

“Access to electricity is more than just a convenience—it is the key to unlocking opportunities, improving education, enhancing healthcare, and stimulating the local economy. For the people of Lambata, this mini-grid will achieve just that. Collaboration with key development partners such as the German Corporation, the European Union, and GIZ has been instrumental in driving this initiative forward,” he said.

The executive director of the Rural Electrification Fund (REF), Doris Uboh, assured the community that they would receive training on maintaining the mini-grid, ensuring its long-term sustainability.

“This mini-grid will power essential infrastructure such as primary healthcare centres, schools, agricultural facilities, and rural communities in general, as well as support transportation via e-mobility.

“This initiative is a joint venture between the REA and sub-national governments. It is designed to maximise the economic and social benefits of energy access through the deployment of renewable energy, which will unlock vast economic potential.

“There is no community or state in Nigeria that is not amply blessed with solid minerals, and without electricity, you cannot achieve what you wish to achieve,” she stated.

On his part, deputy ambassador of Germany, Johannes Lehne, stated that with this project, residents of Lambata can now enjoy stable electricity, fostering business growth and improving overall quality of life.

Residents also expressed their excitement, hoping that the initiative would pave the way for further infrastructure development in the area. They expressed gratitude for the project, noting that reliable electricity would significantly enhance local businesses, education, and healthcare services.
