Ebere Anenih is the managing director and chief executive officer of Weststar Associates Limited, the authorised general distributor of Mercedes-Benz vehicles in Nigeria.
Under her leadership, Weststar has become synonymous with world-class automotive experiences, setting a benchmark for reliability, safety, and premium service in a market that often tests resilience.
From the very beginning, Anenih makes it clear that Weststar’s mission goes far beyond selling cars. “We provide complete, end-to-end mobility solutions that reflect the global standards of the Mercedes-Benz brand,” she explains.
This philosophy has guided the company’s expansion across passenger cars, commercial vehicles, trucks, and buses, all supported by a robust after-sales network. For customers, this means ownership is not just about driving a vehicle but enjoying a seamless journey defined by trust and excellence.
Transitioning from product to principle, Anenih emphasises that trust is the cornerstone of Weststar’s success. In a market where authenticity can be uncertain, Weststar has built its reputation on genuine parts, certified technicians, and customer-centred innovations. “We take pride in standing as a symbol of integrity, consistency, and assurance,” she says, underscoring the company’s role as a guardian of quality in Nigeria’s automotive industry.
Nineteen years on, Weststar’s story is one of resilience and deliberate growth. The company has not only positioned Mercedes-Benz as Nigeria’s leading luxury automotive brand but has also strengthened that position through innovation and expansion. From enhancing after-sales infrastructure to widening its footprint across key cities, Weststar has remained focused on solutions that meet the evolving needs of Nigerians.
Of course, operating in Nigeria is not without challenges. Economic fluctuations, foreign exchange pressures, and shifting customer expectations constantly test the industry. Yet, Anenih insists that these hurdles have only sharpened Weststar’s resolve. “We have stayed true to our standards and continued to grow with purpose,” she reflects.
At the heart of this journey lies customer loyalty. Generations of Nigerians from corporate leaders to government institutions continue to choose Mercedes-Benz. For Anenih, this loyalty is not just a business metric; it is a reflection of the brand’s strength and the dedication of her team. “Mercedes-Benz is an aspirational brand, and my goal is to ensure that the brand meets our customers’ expectations,” she affirms.
Lucrativity
When asked how lucrative the business is, Anenih offers a candid perspective. The automotive industry, particularly the premium segment, is highly capital-intensive and demands patience. “True profitability is not immediate. It is built through strategic planning, operational efficiency, and strong brand equity,” she explains. For Weststar, success is not measured by short-term gains but by sustainability. After-sales services, parts distribution, and customer retention form the backbone of long-term profitability.
This philosophy has shaped Weststar’s approach: every decision is intentional, every investment geared toward strengthening the foundation for the future. “When everything comes together – strategy, execution, and customer trust – the results are not only financially rewarding but also reinforce the long-term strength and reputation of the brand,” Anenih notes.
Challenges
Nigeria’s automotive landscape presents unique obstacles, from foreign exchange volatility and import regulations to infrastructure gaps and counterfeit parts. Weststar’s response has been to double down on after-sales support. By ensuring access to genuine parts and investing in highly trained technicians, the company protects both the brand’s integrity and the customer’s experience.
Resilience, Anenih stresses, is non-negotiable. “We do not see these challenges as setbacks, but rather as opportunities to refine our approach, adapt where necessary, and continue to strengthen our leadership position,” she says with conviction.
Advice
For those dreaming of success in the automotive business, Anenih offers practical wisdom. First, patience is key. “This industry requires a willingness to invest, both financially and intellectually. It is not a space for quick wins but one that rewards long-term thinking and consistency.”
Second, authenticity and quality must never be compromised. “In a market where shortcuts can be tempting, lasting success is built on trust, credibility, and doing things the right way.”
Third, invest in people. At Weststar, 13 key managers boast a combined experience of over 273 years, a testament to the value placed on skill, continuous learning, and professionalism. “Your team is at the heart of your business,” she insists.
Finally, Anenih urges aspiring leaders to think beyond transactions. “The future of the automotive industry is centred on customer experience. It’s about how you engage, support, and build lasting relationships, and not just with today’s customers, but with tomorrow’s.”
