Ebola: NCDC Tightens Screening, Targets Travellers From High-Risk Countries

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has tightened Ebola surveillance at the country’s points of entry, saying travellers from countries with active or relevant Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) transmission may be required to complete Health Declaration Forms.

The agency made this known in an interim public health advisory dated September 22, 2026, signed by its Director-General, Dr. Jide Idris.

NCDC said the revised measure followed a dynamic risk assessment and consultations with public health experts and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

The agency said passengers arriving from countries without active or relevant EVD transmission are, for now, exempt from completing the Health Declaration Form.

NCDC explained that the form is being used as part of enhanced public health surveillance and follow-up of travellers considered to be of public health interest.

“Travellers from countries with active or relevant EVD transmission may be required to complete the Health Declaration Form as part of enhanced public health surveillance and follow-up measures,” the agency said.

Despite the targeted approach, NCDC urged Nigerians and travellers to remain vigilant, particularly for symptoms associated with Ebola.

It advised anyone who develops symptoms consistent with EVD to seek medical attention promptly and disclose any relevant travel or exposure history to health authorities.

The agency said Nigeria remains on high alert, with preparatory activities continuing as authorities monitor developments surrounding the outbreak.

NCDC stressed that the measures are subject to review as the epidemiological situation evolves and new public health risk assessments become available.

The advisory was also addressed to key stakeholders, including the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Port Health Services, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, state ministries of health, the World Health Organization (WHO) and Africa CDC.

The NCDC reiterated its commitment to protecting Nigerians through evidence-based surveillance, preparedness and response to public health threats.
