The people of Ukawu community in Onicha local government area of Ebonyi State have expressed sadness over the incessant fatal road crashes witnessed on the federal road linking the community to other areas of the state which they said is occasioned by over speeding and reckless driving.

In a letter to the chairman of Onicha local government area and the member representing Onicha East state constituency, signed by Comrade Charles Uwa and made available to LEADERSHIP, the community said that there are several markets and schools along the corridors of the road and needed speed breakers to forestall a recurrence of such fatal road accidents.

Comrade Uwa said, “We, the residents of Ukawu Community, are writing to you once again, seeking your genuine intervention and immediate action regarding an urgent issue affecting the safety and well-being of our community.

“While we deeply appreciate the attention given to our previous petitions, particularly the rebuilding of the Onuebonyi collapsed bridge, we now face an alarming and pressing challenge that demands your swift intervention.

“The federal road that traverses Ukawu is a critical road linking us to various markets and schools. However, its current state of neglect, particularly concerning vehicle speed, poses a severe threat to our community. We are calling for the installation of speed breakers in key locations along this road.

“The areas of concern includes, Onunwakwo Amankpuma Market, Onunwakwo Amofia Market, and Amankpuma Comprehensive Primary School. These are areas bustling with pedestrian activity, where children, market traders, and other community members frequently cross.”

He lamented that the absence of adequate speed control measures has already resulted in tragic consequences. “Recently, at Onunwakwo Market Square, two lives were lost. A pregnant woman and other victim. This heartbreaking event starkly illustrates the urgent need for action along the corridors.

“The unfortunate incident accidents have unveiled the reality that high-speed vehicles and motorcycles pose a serious danger to those who reside, work, or simply traverse the areas. We cannot afford to wait for another tragedy to occur before we compel our leaders to act.”

He noted that constructing speed breakers along the areas will serve a crucial purpose, adding that such measures will not only make the speeding vehicles slow down but will also safeguard the lives of the people, especially the elderly, pregnant women and children who use the road frequently.

“The strategic installation of speed breakers at the aforementioned locations would significantly reduce the risk of accidents and foster a safer environment for our children as they travel to and from Amankpuma Comprehensive Primary School and for traders and buyers frequenting our markets.

“The implementation of this measure is not merely a suggestion; it is a necessity, one driven by the need for immediate action to protect our community members who are daily exposed to peril while they go about their legitimate activities.”

He called on the council boss to prioritise the issue and take the necessary steps to improve road safety in the community. “By responding swiftly and decisively, will demonstrate your commitment to the welfare of Ukawu people and its residents.

“Please understand that every day that passes without these safety measures endangers the lives of our people and contributes to a growing sentiment of neglect and despair among the community.

“We should not have to live in fear of the next accident; instead, we ought to feel secure in our environment, knowing that our leaders actively support our well-being.”
