There was tension and apprehension in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital yesterday as operatives of the EbubeAgu Security Outfit shot sporadically into the air and disrupted a meeting of the Ebonyi Federated Women Organisation.

The organisation which comprises of 17 women groups gathered at the People’s Club along Enugu-Abakaliki Express Road to hold their meeting when the operatives invaded the venue and started shooting into the air.

Some of the women according to LEADERSHIP SUNDAY were injured while scampering for safety.

It was also gathered that the operatives seized the canopies and seats and took them to the old Government House in Abakaliki.

The women who later regrouped and protested against the disruption of their activities described the invasion as regrettable and called for full investigation into the attack.

Their spokesperson, Mrs. Amaka Chukwu, accused the state government of masterminding the attack, saying; “It was the state government that sent the Ebubeagu operatives to unleash mayhem on us. We are mothers in the state. August meeting is an annual event. In the hands of the government in Ebonyi State, we were beaten, chased away. When we got to the venue, suddenly we were just discussing with the event decorator, the boys called Ebubeagu came shooting.

“They said we are supporting the PDP governorship candidate, Ifeanyi Odii. Some of our women are still missing. The government of Ebonyi State sent Ebubeagu to chase us away from a private place.”

Reacting, the special assistant to the state governor on internal security, Mr Panchris Eze, said the group disrupted the meeting because of a security alert that members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra were also planning to have a meeting at the same venue.
