An unusual calmness has pervaded the ever-busy Sapele Road and other deserted streets in Benin City, the Edo State capital as residents gear up for the State’s governorship election on Saturday morning.

The atmosphere, which was usually filled with the sounds and sights of daily business activities, is noticeably subdued as voters make final preparations to cast their ballots in the governorship election.

The development was apparently in compliance with the restriction order of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and it reflects the cautious anticipation that often accompanies election day in the capital city. Voters were seen waiting to ensure all necessary logistics were in place before they head to the polling units.

A significant security presence is visible at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office on Sapele Road.

LEADERSHIP reports that security forces, comprising police officers and military personnel, were stationed in strategic locations to maintain peace and ensure the electoral process runs smoothly.

INEC officials were also actively preparing their materials, with ballot boxes, voter registration devices, and other electoral tools being readied for distribution to various polling units across the city.

The electoral umpire has reassured the public of its readiness to conduct a credible election and urged voters to maintain patience and order as the day unfolds.

All eyes remain on Benin City and other key areas in the state to see how the process unfolds as voting gets underway.

Residents, many of whom have expressed hope for a smooth and peaceful exercise, were expected to turn out in their numbers to cast their votes in what is anticipated to be a pivotal moment for the State.

Three candidates are front-runners in the election. They include Asue Ighodalo of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Barr. Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP).
