The Edo State Government has ordered the immediate closure of three secondary schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area following rising security concerns and fears of a possible abduction of students.

The affected schools are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo; Ososo Comprehensive High School, Ososo; and Makeke Secondary School, Makeke.

The government said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to protect students, teachers and other school staff from potential security threats.

The closure follows reports circulating on social media, allegedly linked to a Department of State Services (DSS) alert, warning of a planned mass abduction of school children in parts of the state.

The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele, said the directive was part of efforts by the administration to safeguard lives and property.

He quoted the governor as saying that the safety of students and school personnel remains a top priority of his government.

“The Edo State Government hereby announces for the information of the general public, the immediate closure of Ososo Grammar School, Ososo; Ososo Comprehensive High School, Ososo; and Makeke Secondary School, Makeke, with immediate effect and until further notice,” a statement issued said.

According to the government, all academic and non-academic activities in the affected schools have been suspended until further notice.

However, it directed that students sitting for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will still be allowed access to their examination centres under strict security arrangements coordinated by school authorities, security agencies and community leaders.

The statement further instructed principals of the affected schools to ensure the safe release of students to their parents and guardians, secure school facilities and maintain regular communication with education and security authorities.

Parents and residents were urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to strengthen safety in the area and restore normal academic activities when conditions improve.
