Edo State governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has flagged off the 2026 farming season with the distribution of agricultural inputs and equipment to farmers across the 18 local government areas of the state to boost food production and ensure food security.
The event, held at the Agricultural Hub on Oko-Ogba Road in Benin City, also marked the commencement of the second phase of the administration’s back-to-farm initiative, attracting farmers and key stakeholders who showcased a wide range of farm produce, reflecting the state’s agricultural potential.
Represented by the secretary to the state government, Mr Musa Ikhilor, the governor said the initiative underscores his administration’s commitment to supporting genuine farmers and strengthening the agricultural sector through increased funding and strategic programmes.
He stressed that agriculture remains a cardinal pillar of the administration’s SHINE agenda.
Okpebholo noted that upon assumption of office in November 2024, his administration prioritised agriculture in its budgeting, describing the sector as critical to sustainable development.
He added that his visit to the Iguoriakhi Farm Settlement, the first by any governor in two decades, demonstrated his resolve to engage directly with farmers and ensure resources reach actual practitioners rather than “political farmers.”
He assured that government would continue to provide the enabling environment for farmers to thrive, including access to tractors, improved inputs, and other mechanisation tools, while reiterating the importance of increased food production to meet the needs of the state’s growing population.
Earlier, the commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr Jerry Uwangue, said the programme was designed to promote timely planning and adoption of modern farming techniques.
In the same vein, a guest lecturer, Mr Sunny Eronseyi, called for strengthened agricultural systems to enhance productivity, while beneficiaries including Uwensuyi Monday, Godfrey Omoruyi and Henry Ebole, commended the state government’s intervention and appealed for sustained support.
