Edo-based socio-cultural group, Edo Youth for Sustainable Development (EYSD), has expressed support for the return bid of the Member representing Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal Constituency of Edo State, Hon. Billy Osawaru, urging him to consolidate on the gains of his first term in office.

The group, in a statement made available to journalists in Benin City at the weekend, and signed by its Coordinator and Secretary, Imade Osagie and Fred Igbinosa, respectively, said its assessment of Osawaru’s performance across the federal constituency showed that he deserved another term.

According to the statement, the youth group undertook a tour of communities within the constituency to assess the lawmaker’s projects and interventions, noting that his stewardship met the expectations of the people.

The group also called on party leaders and the electorate to demand a clear record of stewardship from individuals seeking public office, particularly those who had previously held political positions.

They noted that the era of imposing candidates on the people was over, adding that the people of Edo South had become more enlightened and politically aware, and would now ask critical questions before casting their votes.

Speaking in the statement, Osagie said deepening the gains of democracy in Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal Constituency required collective support for the incumbent lawmaker.

“To deepen the gains of democracy, especially in Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde Federal Constituency, it is important for all stakeholders to support the current member, Hon. Billy Osawaru, to consolidate on his achievements,” he said.

“There is no doubt that Osawaru has raised the bar of development in his constituency. Today, we are proud of what he has done. This is the first time we are actually having a true representation.”

Osagie further described Osawaru as a promise keeper, noting that the lawmaker had facilitated several need-based constituency projects that were evenly distributed across Orhionmwon and Uhunmwonde.

“As a promise keeper, Hon. Billy Osawaru has facilitated several need-based constituency projects evenly spread across Orhionmwon and Uhunmwode Federal Constituency,” he said.

He listed some of the projects to include the drilling of over 12 solar-powered industrial boreholes in various communities, construction of three blocks of classrooms, a link bridge, roads, and primary healthcare centres.

According to the group, Osawaru has also carried out several free medical outreaches, organised ICT training programmes, distributed empowerment materials, food palliatives, and agricultural inputs to constituents
.
The group reiterated its call on political stakeholders to prioritise competence, performance, and accountability in choosing candidates, stressing that sustainable development could only be achieved through credible and people-oriented leadership.
