Coalition of civil societies organisations under the auspices of Global Initiatives for Good Governance (GIGG), has demanded an immediate probe of the circumstances surrounding the loss of lives during the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations in Kano State on Sunday.

Led by Malami Abubakar Yahaya Capenta, the coalition in a statement on Monday, blamed the disregard for the Police ban on Durbar the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, for the unfortunate development.

The coalition wondered why the monarch would allegedly openly defy the ban on the horse riding event issued by the Kano State Police Command on the eve of the Sallah Day, which was a necessary measure to protect lives and properties.

Commending the security agencies in Kano State for their professionalism and commitment to maintaining order in the face of escalating tensions, the group demanded immediate action to hold Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and others who enabled him accountable for their roles in the preventable tragedy.

The coalition insisted that justice must be served to restore public trust and deter further abuse of power.

They therefore called on the people of Kano to remain vigilant and demand accountability from their leaders.

“Our state deserves governance that prioritizes the welfare and safety of its citizens over political grandstanding and reckless displays of authority.

“The Coalition stands firm in demanding: Accountability– A full investigation into the deaths and injuries caused by these unlawful actions. Justice – Prosecution of all officials involved in violating the police ban and endangering lives. Transparency – A public explanation from the Kano State Government on its repeated disregard for human lives. We will not relent in our pursuit of justice and good governance. The people of Kano deserve better,” Capenta stated.
