The Soun of Ogbomosoland in Oyo State, His Imperial Majesty Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, Orumogege III, has extended warm greetings to Muslim faithful across Ogbomoso Land and beyond, calling for peace and religious tolerance as they celebrate this year’s Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the ‘Ileya’ Festival.
In a message signed by the monarch’s Special Assistant on Media and Community Relations, Peter Olaleye, Oba Olaoye rejoiced with all sons and daughters of Ogbomosoland, including non-indigenes residing in his domain, who are observing the Islamic festival.
The Soun described Eid-ul-Adha as a significant celebration that reflects the virtues of sacrifice, obedience, and devotion, commemorating Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in submission to God’s command.
“Be reminded that Eid-ul-Adha, better known as the ‘Festival of Sacrifice’, is one of the most significant celebrations in the Islamic tradition, celebrated by millions of Muslims around the world. Because it commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to offer his son as a sacrifice in an act of obedience to God. This festival revealed the spirit of sacrifice, devotion, and generosity.
“As we gather to celebrate, we must all reflect on these virtues and express gratitude for the blessings received throughout the year.
“The importance of this celebration lies not only in the physical act of sacrifice but also in the profound spiritual and communal values it promotes,” the message stated.
He emphasised the need for peace, unity, and religious tolerance, stating that no meaningful development can occur in a society lacking religious understanding.
“Therefore, we must embrace peace, unity, and religious tolerance. It is obvious that no development takes place in a society lacking in religious understanding.”
He also reiterated his commitment to the ongoing 25-year development plan for Ogbomosoland, which aims to lift residents out of poverty and transform the region in line with 21st-century standards.
“It is my prayer that the blessings of Allah be with you all on this auspicious occasion of Ileya. May this festival bring us closer to each other, strengthen our faith, and reaffirm our commitment to peace and unity,” the Soun of Ogbomoso concluded.
