Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who represents Abia North Senatorial District in the 10th National Assembly, has assured Nigerians that the amendment of the Electoral Act was progressing steadily, despite ongoing legislative engagements around the national budget.
Speaking on Channels Television’s breakfast show, ‘Sunrise Daily’, on Tuesday, Kalu disclosed that the Senate has intensified efforts to advance work on the proposed amendment, including holding emergency sittings and extended committee sessions.
“Electoral Act amendment is on track. We had an emergency meeting last week, and we are having another one. We were supposed to resume on the 24th. We are possibly doing the budget hearing, and today we have shut down on the budget hearing,” he said.
The former Abia State governor explained that, despite the heavy schedule surrounding budget deliberations, members of the electoral committee have continued to work behind the scenes to ensure progress on the amendment process.
“I was in the office for the electoral committee. I am a member of the harmonising committee, the electoral committee. I was in the office from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for the harmonising,” Kalu added.
His remarks came amid public interest in proposed reforms to Nigeria’s electoral framework, particularly following debates over technological innovations, the transmission of election results, and the conduct of the recent general elections.
The proposed amendment to the Electoral Act is expected to address gaps identified in previous elections and strengthen the legal framework guiding future polls.
