Sokoto state Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Usaini Gumel, has again warn those desperate in engaging on crimes such as threats, direct or indirect including causing grievous harm, criminal intimidation, extortion, looting, arsons or mischief to cause a breakdown of law and order in the guise of celebrating election victories to desist from such plan.
CP Gumel addressing journalists at the command headquarters stated that the 79 suspects arrested during the March 18 Governorship and State House of Assembly elections for contravening the Electoral Act were fully investigated and already transferred to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for prosecution.
However, others that contravened the penal code have been charged to court by the Police, while others that are still under investigation will be prosecuted at the conclusion of investigation.
He listed reported cases of criminal conspiracy and causing hurt in the disguise of celebrating election victories at Tureta, Sokoto North, Gwadabawa local government areas and Sokoto metropolis. While, the cases in Tureta and Gwadabawa local governments have been investigated and suspects charged to court, those from Sokoto North and the metropolis are still under investigation.
The CP however, called on any person who is a victim of such persecution to report to the police command and never to take law into his or her hand or engage in reprisal.
CP Gumel, who enjoined the media to broadcast jingles produced by the Command against violence in the state, assuring the law abiding people of the state of its preparedness to provide the best form of security for the forthcoming supplementary elections slated to take place on April 15, 2023.
