Elon Musk is setting his sights on the semiconductor industry with an ambitious multibillion-dollar project in Texas.

According to a public notice released on Wednesday, Musk’s rocket company, SpaceX, plans to invest at least $55 billion in a massive semiconductor manufacturing facility known as ‘Terafab.’ The plant would focus on producing advanced chips for artificial intelligence, robotics and space-based data centres.

The facility is expected to be jointly operated by Tesla and SpaceX, marking a major expansion of Musk’s growing technology empire.

Documents linked to the proposal revealed that the initial investment for the project would stand at $55 billion. However, if future phases are completed, the total capital investment could reportedly climb to an eye-watering $119 billion.

Terafab is set to be constructed in Grimes County, Texas, roughly 70 miles northwest of Houston. Officials described the project as a “transformative investment” that could significantly strengthen domestic semiconductor manufacturing capacity in the United States.

Although Musk has no direct background in semiconductor production, he has repeatedly argued that Tesla and SpaceX will soon require far more computing power than global chip suppliers can currently provide.

The billionaire entrepreneur believes the demand for artificial intelligence systems, robotics and space technology will continue to surge in the coming years, making in-house chip manufacturing increasingly necessary.

According to the proposal, the project’s long-term goal is to manufacture chips capable of supporting between 100 and 200 gigawatts of computing power on Earth, alongside a terawatt of computing power in space.

Local authorities are already preparing to discuss incentives tied to the project. The Grimes County Commissioners Court is expected to meet on June 3 to consider approving a property tax abatement for the proposed development.

If approved, Terafab could become one of the largest semiconductor manufacturing investments ever announced in the United States.
