The family of business mogul Tony Elumelu has donated food items to orphanage homes in Lagos, Edo and Delta states as part of its end-of-year humanitarian outreach.
The donation, which covered six orphanage homes in Lagos State and three locations each in Edo and Delta states, was flagged off in Lagos by the chairperson of Avon Healthcare Limited, Dr. Awele Elumelu, at the Hearts of Gold Children’s Hospice, Masha, Surulere, at the weekend.
Items distributed included 1,730 bags of rice and 290 bags of beans, aimed at supporting vulnerable children and easing the burden on caregivers ahead of the new year.
Beneficiary homes in Lagos included Hearts of Gold Children’s Hospice; Little Saints Orphanage, Surulere; SOS Children’s Village, Isolo; Living Fountain Orphanage; Adiel Children’s Home, Ilupeju; and Compassionate Orphanage, Egbeda.
In Delta State, the outreach covered facilities and communities in Onichukwu, including locations around the FMC School of Nursing and the NYSC orientation camp. Edo State was also included in the distribution exercise.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Elumelu said the donation was the family’s modest contribution to supporting orphaned and vulnerable children amid prevailing economic challenges, while encouraging more individuals and organisations to support similar causes.
She explained that the outreach was extended beyond Lagos to Edo and Delta states to reflect the nationwide nature of the needs of vulnerable children.
Also speaking, the Founder of Hearts of Gold Children’s Hospice, Mrs. Laja Adedoyin, expressed appreciation to the Elumelu family, noting that their support earlier in the year had helped the hospice remain operational despite rising costs.
Adedoyin explained that the facility operates as a specialised medical hospice rather than a conventional orphanage, providing care for children with complex medical and developmental conditions, including cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and other congenital abnormalities. She added that donations received are largely directed toward medical care and daily treatment needs for the children.
