Speaking at the maiden convocation ceremony of the university, Governor Mohammed emphasized the importance of responsible behaviour and cautioned students against negative influences and anti-social conduct. He stressed that the future of the state and the nation largely depends on the youth, addressing the students as the leaders of tomorrow.

“The purpose of university life is not solely for academic pursuits but also to learn how to lead a responsible life independently. Your education has been heavily invested in by both the government and your parents. It’s crucial to refrain from anti-social behaviour and negative peer influence,” Governor Mohammed asserted.

LEADERSHIP reports that during the ceremony the Governing Council and Senate of the university conferred Honorary Doctorate Degrees upon notable individuals, including Governor Mohammed; Emir of Bauchi, Dr Rilwanu Sulaimanu Adamu, Chancellor of the University; Emir of Katagum Umar Faruq II; Former Bauchi State Governor, Malam Isah Yuguda; and Late Malam Sa’idu Zungur for their contributions to the university’s development and the education sector.

Expressing his administration’s commitment to facilitating a conducive environment for academic pursuits, Governor Mohammed assured the provision of infrastructure and adequate support to state-owned tertiary institutions to ensure smooth academic operations.

Commending the university’s management for maintaining peace on its campuses and fostering a strong relationship with the State Government and relevant educational agencies, Governor Mohammed pledged continued support for research and innovation in the institution.

He said, “The world is moving towards digital economy and my vision for the university and indeed other tertiary institutions in the state is to promote technology and skill acquisition in order for our graduates to be self-reliant, not job seekers. I therefore challenge the University to come up with courses and programmes that will turn the tide and open up opportunities for our people to improve their economy.”

Acknowledging his conferment with an Honorary Doctorate Degree, Governor Mohammed highlighted the forthcoming Educational Summit, holding on December 18 and 19, 2023, aimed at transforming the education sector in Bauchi State. He urged the university to contribute ideas towards tackling security challenges, particularly severe crimes, kidnapping, and drug addiction.

Concluding his address, Governor Mohammed called for selflessness, cooperation, and commitment among the university staff, stressing the need for collective efforts in moving Bauchi state forward.

The convocation saw a total of 7,543 students graduating across various academic levels, marking a significant achievement for Bauchi State University, Gadau.

BASUG’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Fatima Tahir, congratulated parents, graduands, awardees, staff and management of the university for their collective sacrifices towards achieving great success.
