The Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Sama’ila Muhammadu Mera, has been honoured as Nigeria’s Best Amirul Hajj for the year, in a recognition that extends beyond the religious realm into the sphere of community leadership and sustainable development.
The accolade was warmly acknowledged by H.E. Alh Yahya Muhammad Guregi, African Continental Governor of the World Sustainable Development Goals Organization (WSDGsO), who praised the Emir’s commitment to service, unity, and ethical governance.
In a press statement released on Monday in Abuja, Alh Guregi described the Hajj pilgrimage as a pinnacle of faith and unity among Muslims globally, underscoring the importance of leaders who facilitate such sacred journeys with excellence and compassion.
“The Emir’s dedication to ensuring a seamless pilgrimage for thousands is a testament to the spirit of service that embodies the best of our traditions and values,” Guregi said. “Recognising leaders like the Emir of Argungu is vital as it promotes community engagement, peace, and mutual understanding.”
Beyond his spiritual stewardship, the Emir has also made significant strides in promoting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through grassroots initiatives focusing on education, health, and community development. As a member of the WSDGsO Traditional/Mayor Council in West Africa, he has been instrumental in advancing inclusive and sustainable projects.
“His initiatives foster a sense of belonging and community spirit that resonates throughout the region,” Guregi noted, highlighting the Emir’s ability to combine traditional leadership with modern development strategies.
According to the UNDP, strong community bonds are essential to achieving the SDGs—a sentiment reflected in the Emir’s leadership model. His approach has also been praised for exemplifying ethical leadership, with the Centre for Ethical Leadership noting that such values are critical for trust, accountability, and democratic progress.
The Emir’s role during Hajj has also been viewed through a health and safety lens. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, his management was in line with WHO recommendations on culturally competent health strategies during large gatherings.
Under his leadership, the Argungu Hajj delegation has been lauded for its logistical excellence, care for pilgrims’ welfare, and a strong sense of accountability. “His adept management of resources and people illustrates that mindful leadership can lead to remarkable outcomes even in the face of hardship,” Guregi said.
The Emir’s inclusive approach has also enabled underprivileged community members to participate in the Hajj through dedicated outreach initiatives. This effort aligns with WSDGsO’s mission to combat inequality and promote equity.
“This achievement is not merely an individual accolade but a celebration of the values and heritage of the Argungu community and a signal of progress in sustainable development leadership,” Guregi concluded.
As Nigeria continues to navigate complex development challenges, the Emir of Argungu’s model of integrated leadership stands out as a beacon for ethical governance, community empowerment,
and sustainable progress.
