In this article, Hon. Leke Abejide, a political aspirant for the governorship seat in Kogi State, sheds light on the crucial role of empowering rural communities in bringing about meaningful change and development. With significant socio-economic disparities between urban and rural areas in Kogi State, it is essential to prioritize rural development and ensure that local knowledge and participation play a central role in government programs.

Hon. Leke emphasizes the significance of local knowledge and participation in promoting the advancement of rural communities. Recognizing the traditional ways of life, skills, and experiences of these communities, meaningful participation involves engaging them in the decision-making processes of development programs. Collaboration between government agencies, rural communities, non-governmental organizations, and civil society groups is vital for success.

To ensure the successful implementation of development projects, the government needs to foster transparency and accountability. Rural communities should have access to information about project purposes, budgets, timelines, and quality standards. This transparency builds trust and confidence among communities, ensuring that government policies cater to their needs and are efficiently executed.

Empowering rural communities requires providing the necessary resources and financing. Access to finance in rural areas is limited, so the government should collaborate with financial institutions and incentivize private sector investments in rural areas. Essential infrastructure such as water boreholes, power supply, and access roads should be prioritized. Technical support and vocational skills training can help rural communities become self-sufficient and create job opportunities.

Empowering rural communities is a critical factor in the success of government programs in Kogi State. Hon. Leke Abejide pledges to prioritize the empowerment of rural areas, recognizing their equal importance in the state’s development. By ensuring transparent governance, access to finance, and necessary resources, Kogi State can achieve sustainable economic growth, improved healthcare, access to clean water, and quality education. Together, a more prosperous Kogi State can be built, benefiting all its residents.
