Empowerment: Kano Govt Disburses N290m To 5,800 Women

The Kano State Government has disbursed N290m grants to 5,800 women across the 44 local government areas of the state under its Monthly Women’s Empowerment and Poverty Relief Programme.

Flagging off the latest phase of the programme at the Open Arena, Government House, Kano on Monday, Governor, Abba Yusuf, said each beneficiary would receive N50,000 to enable her start or expand a small-scale business and improve her family’s livelihood.

The governor explained that 20 per cent of the beneficiaries from each of the 44 LGAs were invited to the flag-off, while the remaining 80 per cent would receive their grants at their respective local government areas.

“Today, we are launching support for 5,800 women individually. Out of these 5,800, we selected 20 per cent from each local government area to attend this launch ceremony.

“Tomorrow, every local government chairman and committee members will go to their respective local governments to distribute support to the remaining 80 per cent,” he said.

Yusuf said the empowerment programme had been ongoing since the inception of his administration, but was briefly suspended during the transition of the administration to the All Progressives Congress.

He said the pause was necessary to restructure the programme and ensure that women who had previously registered, as well as those who joined the APC, were captured.

The governor assured the beneficiaries that funds had been set aside for the programme and that payments would continue until December.

He urged the women to invest the grants in viable businesses, including petty trading and food-related businesses, to enable them to support themselves and their families.

Yusuf also solicited the support of the women for APC candidates in the 2027 elections, urging them to vote for the party’s presidential, governorship, National Assembly and state Assembly candidates.
In his remarks, the Deputy Governor, Murtala Garo, said about 97 per cent of the administration’s campaign promises had been fulfilled, particularly in health, education and road infrastructure.

He commended the governor for the empowerment initiative, saying it would improve the livelihoods of women across the state.

The Emir of Gaya, Dr Aliyu Abdulkadir, also commended the programme, describing it as an intervention that was directly improving the lives of residents.
