There were glowing tributes on Tuesday as the Head of the Complaints Unit of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Dr. Bashir Alhassan Ambi-Mohammed, retired from service after 26 years of meritorious service to the Council and the maritime industry.
The retirement ceremony, which also coincided with his birthday celebration, was held at the Council’s headquarters in Lagos and attracted management staff, colleagues, family members, friends and maritime stakeholders, all of whom gathered to celebrate a career widely described as exemplary and impactful.
Leading the tributes, Chairman of the occasion and Director of Strategic Planning and Research at the NSC, Mr. Rotimi Anifowose, described Ambi-Mohammed as one of the Council’s finest officers whose contributions have left a lasting legacy in the organisation.
Anifowose recalled being a member of the panel that recruited Ambi-Mohammed into the Council more than two decades ago, expressing satisfaction with the decision.
“I can proudly say that the interview panel made at least one very good decision. We got that one absolutely right,” he said.
He noted that throughout his career, Ambi-Mohammed demonstrated humility, professionalism, patience and fairness, especially in handling complaints and resolving disputes involving stakeholders.
“It is perhaps fitting that a man who spent years resolving other people’s complaints is retiring without leaving us with any complaints about his service. That in itself is a remarkable achievement,” Anifowose stated.
According to him, despite working in an office often inundated with aggrieved stakeholders seeking redress, the retiring officer remained calm, dependable and highly respected by both colleagues and industry players.
“Not everyone can turn complaints into compliments, but he came remarkably close to doing that,” he added.
Describing the celebrant as both a colleague and a brother, Anifowose also highlighted Ambi-Mohammed’s strong family values, integrity and commitment to education and long-term development.
Ambi-Mohammed joined the Nigerian Shippers’ Council in 2000 as a Public Relations Officer after beginning his professional career with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC).
During his years at the Council, he served in several strategic capacities, including as Personal Assistant to former NSC Governing Board chairmen and the late Capt. Adamu A. Biu, a former Executive Secretary of the Council. He also worked in the Consumer Affairs Department before rising to become Head of the Complaints Unit.
An accomplished scholar and professional, Ambi-Mohammed holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication from the University of Maiduguri, Master’s Degrees in Mass Communication and International Transport, as well as M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in Mass Communication.
He is also a Certified Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Practitioner and a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).
Beyond his official responsibilities, he served as General Secretary and later President of the NSC Staff Cooperative Society, where he oversaw significant growth in the cooperative’s financial base. He also served twice as Chairman of the Lagos State Branch of CILT Nigeria and currently serves as General Secretary of the Lagos State Chapter of NIPR.
Throughout his career, Ambi-Mohammed received several awards and honours, including the NSC ACTU/ICPC Integrity Award, NSC CEO Award, CILT Nigeria President’s Awards and the prestigious CILT International President’s Award in 2024.
Colleagues who paid tribute described him as a mentor, administrator, scholar and consummate professional whose commitment to excellence strengthened the Council’s dispute resolution mechanism and enhanced stakeholders’ confidence in the organisation.
Many speakers noted that his retirement marked the end of a remarkable era in the Council’s complaints management system, while expressing confidence that his legacy of integrity, accountability and dedicated service would continue to inspire future generations of officers.
The event featured goodwill messages, presentations, prayers and birthday celebrations in honour of the retiring officer, whose 26-year career was celebrated as a testament to dedication, loyalty and exemplary public service.
