Bolarin Okunowo, the managing director of CAP PLC, has said ending lead poisoning is possible and within reach.

Okunowo, who disclosed this in a statement made available to LEADERSHIP, spoke against the backdrop of the celebration of the International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (ILPPW) 2024.

It was gathered that the campaign’s goal was to raise awareness about the dangers of lead exposure and promote prevention strategies across communities.

LEADERSHIP reports that the World Health Organization (WHO) has said that nearly one million people die annually due to lead poisoning, with countless more, especially children, suffering long-term health consequences.

Lead poisoning remains a significant public health issue, particularly affecting the most vulnerable children. Also, exposure to lead can cause irreversible damage to brain development, resulting in lower IQ, behavioural problems such as reduced attention span, increased antisocial tendencies, and diminished educational outcomes.

However, the CAP PLC boss reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to providing safe, high-quality paint solutions that contribute to healthier living environments.

“CAP has maintained a lead-free standard for many years. We call on all value-chain stakeholders to adopt similar standards so that as an industry, we collectively prioritise the health and safety of our employees, customers, and the environment by offering entirely lead-free paints.”

“We believe that every child in Nigeria deserves a safe environment in which to grow and thrive,” said Bolarin Okunowo, managing director and chief executive officer of CAP Plc.
