Ahead of the forthcoming general election, wife of Akwa Ibom State governor, Mrs Martha Udom Emmanuel, yesterday joined women drawn from the nine local government areas of Uyo senatorial district (Akwa Ibom North-East), soliciting for a common front to ensure her husband is succeeded by Pastor Umo Eno. This is even as Mrs Emmanuel assured that Eno would sustain the legacies of her husband.
It was at the expansive Ibom Hall ground, where the women gathered to endorse the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Eno, and other candidates of the party.
While urging the women to close ranks to ensure the PDP retains the state it has ruled since the return of democracy in 1999, Martha Emmanuel, assured that only Eno and his running mate, Senator Akon Eyakenyi’s ticket remains the sure banker that would sustain the legacies of development of the outgoing administration ably piloted by her husband in the last eight years.
Commending the women for trooping out to endorse the ticket, the governor’s wife, charged those yet to obtain their permanent voter’s cards (PVCs) to “ensure you have the card that will guarantee you to vote for all the PDP candidates during the elections.”
A former member of the state House of Assembly for Itu state constituency, Dr Ekaette Ebong Okon, who chaired the forum, said the endorsement became necessary as women across the state have no other choice than the PDP in view of “the good governance legacies and gender-based policies and programmes to address the socio-economic challenges confronting the womenfolk”.
She said the women would queue behind Mrs Emmanuel to engender victory for the PDP based on her interventions to address the health, housing, hunger and other challenges confronting the widows, girl-child, the aged, the poor and the orphans in the society.
The political leader of Uyo senatorial district, Senator Effiong Bob; the speaker of the House of Assembly, Aniekan Bassey, who is running for Senate for Uyo senatorial district and his deputy, Felicia Bassey, and others underscored the importance of not yielding the state to the opposition in order to sustain the prevailing peace, unity and ethnic harmony in the state.
