The entertainment industry has showcased our culture and arts beyond the shores of Nigeria. Our stories have been told through music and movies, and the practitioners have transcended from fathers and mothers to children. In this piece, SAMUEL ABULUDE writes on how some entertainers have entrenched their legacy beyond themselves.
The Nigerian entertainment landscape has a rich history of dynastic success, where creative genius, performance art, and entrepreneurial grit have been successfully passed down from legendary icons to their children.
Several prominent Nigerian families have built true entertainment empires across music, film, and television, with the next generation stepping up to carry the torch.
The Afolayan Dynasty (Ade Love’s Children)
Adeyemi Afolayan known as Ade Love was a titan of early Nigerian cinema, renowned for his stage and screen contributions in the golden age of traveling theatre and celluloid films such as Iyani Wura and Taxi Driver. Ade Love died in 1996, and the legacy was passed down to the children who have formed one of Africa’s most formidable filmmaking dynasties.
Kunle Afolayan is an award-winning filmmaker, director, and producer of October 1, The Figurine and AnÃkúlápó.
Gabriel, Aremu, and Moji Afolayan are all established actors and filmmakers who have consistently graced the screen in both Yoruba- and English-language Nollywood.
The Ransome-Kuti Dynasty
The late Fela Anikulapo Kuti was a voice and a great pioneer of Afrobeat, which has inspired many beyond the African continent. Fela died in August 1997. His music legacy has been sustained globally by his sons.

who leads The Positive Force band. Seun Kuti leads his late father’s legendary Egypt 80 band, touring the globe and carrying on both the political consciousness and sonic power of Afrobeat. Already, the Kuti family has spanned three generations of musicians, as Femi’s son, Made Kuti, has taken the cue and is propagating his own brand of Afrobeat.
The Edochie Family
Pete Edochie is a celebrated veteran actor known for his powerful interpretations of traditional royalty and deep wisdom on screen, which has inspired his sons, Yul and Linc, to take after him. He is 79 years old and still in the profession.
Yul Edochie is a popular Nollywood actor and producer who has carved out a niche for himself as an accomplished actor. Linc Edochie is an actor and filmmaker who has also contributed significantly to the family’s acting footprint.
The Adebayo (Oga Bello) Family
Adebayo Salami popularly known as Oga Bello is a foundational icon of the dramatic Yoruba film industry with decades of stage and screen history. At 74, the actor and producer is still active in the industry, having inspired many, including his sons Femi, Tope and Sodiq Adebayo, who are in the movie sector.
Femi Adebayo is a lawyer-turned-actor, producer, and box-office force (King of Thieves, Jagun Jagun) who have made a mark in contemporary Nollywood.

The Kosoko Family
