Most of the farmers who spoke to LEADERSHIP in exclusive interviews said the strange insects have made it difficult for their crops to grow well for harvest.

They said maise, okoro, and tomatoes are the most affected and expressed fears that these crops may not do well this year.

A farmer who identified himself as Obiinna Ekwe said he has tried everything to stop these strange pests from devouring his crops, but to no avail.

“It is a strange development, these pests are so wicked that when they remember your farm or garden, they will continue to destroy the leaves of crops, making it difficult for the crops to grow well.

“Many people have suggested that I should apply many things, including insecticides, but it appears that these pests are immune to these things, and so I don’t know what to do again,” he stated.

Another farmer, Mrs Ifeoma Obigeri, told our correspondent that the situation was no longer funny as the pests had continued to destroy crops and some vegetables.

“The pests are very stubborn and do not die easily. By this time last year, most of the crops had grown for harvest, but they had stunted growth because of these strange pests. Farmers are complaining seriously because of these pests.

“I’m happy that you came to our farms to witness things by yourself, because we are afraid that we may not harvest much this year because of these pests. The level of destruction they are causing to our farms is great,” she stated.
