Residents of Enugu State have expressed joy over the continued decline in the prices of food items after the Christmas celebration.
In separate chats with LEADERSHIP, some of the residents described the development as rare both in the state and the entire country.
They attributed the development to the arrival of newly harvested crops from Northern Nigeria and the surrounding farmlands in Eha-Amufu, Oji River, and other parts of Enugu.
The residents also commended Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State over his huge investment in agriculture, which they said was yielding results.
Our investigations revealed that a container referred to as a paint bucket size of garri, which was sold before the Christmas celebration at N4,300, had dropped to N2500
Similarly, the same container of beans, sold at N3,200 before Christmas, has dropped to N2,100, while a bag of corn fell from N4,000 to N2,000.
Also, 50 kg of rice, sold at N85,000, now goes for N65,000, while a big bulb, earlier sold for N800, has fallen to N400. Similarly, a basket of tomatoes dropped from N18,000 to N10,000.
A resident of Chiene Street in Achara Layout, Enugu, Mrs Ogbonnia Chineye, commended President Bola Tinubu and Governor Mbah for their investments in agriculture, which she said played a major role in the price crash.
Another resident of Achi Street, Mr Ibekwe Uzoegbu, expressed happiness over the trend in food prices, saying the development had mitigated the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.
Despite this development, a farmer who identified herself as Ifeoma Anyanwu said the prices will still fall when most farmers complete their harvests.
