Aston Villa secured a comfortable 3-1 victory over struggling Nottingham Forest at Villa Park on Saturday, alleviating the sting of their midweek thrashing by Arsenal.
The win sees Unai Emery’s side leapfrog Manchester City into second place in the Premier League.
Ollie Watkins opened the scoring just before half-time, giving Villa a deserved lead. John McGinn then doubled their advantage early in the second period. Morgan Gibbs-White pulled one back for the visitors, but McGinn capitalised on a momentary lapse from Forest goalkeeper John Victor to restore Villa’s two-goal cushion.
This victory was crucial for Villa, who’s impressive 11-game winning streak in all competitions was abruptly halted by a 4-1 defeat at the Emirates on Tuesday. However, their formidable record at Villa Park remains intact, with 11 consecutive home wins since a 3-0 loss to Crystal Palace in August.
Despite a dominant first half where they enjoyed nearly 80% possession, Villa struggled to convert their chances until Watkins’ in-form strike. The England international’s goal, his fourth in three games, came after receiving the ball outside the area from Morgan Rogers.
