Bournemouth’s push for European qualification took a hit on Saturday as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Sunderland at the Vitality Stadium. The result saw the Cherries miss an opportunity to strengthen their bid for a spot in continental competition.

Andoni Iraola’s side initially fell behind in the first half when Eliezer Mayenda netted his first Premier League goal since August. However, Evanilson’s sixth goal of the season pulled Bournemouth level in the second half, extending the hosts’ unbeaten league run to eight matches.

A victory would have positioned Bournemouth as outside contenders for a Champions League berth, but they remain in eighth place, with Sunderland two points behind them in eleventh.

Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka made a welcome return to the starting line-up, featuring for the first time since January 17 after recovering from an ankle injury. The Black Cats, who had lost four of their five league games without their influential midfielder, appeared notably more solid with his return.

Sunderland appealed in vain for an early penalty after Enzo Le Fee appeared to be pushed over by Alex Jimenez.

Despite the departure of Antoine Semenyo to Manchester City when the Cherries were languishing in 15th, Bournemouth have surprisingly not lost in the league since. Junior Kroupi’s impressive form has effectively filled the void left by the forward. Kroupi himself threatened an early opener, firing wide from inside the Sunderland area.

Sunderland capitalised on that reprieve to take the lead in the 18th minute. Habib Diarra’s powerful strike was parried by Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, leaving Mayenda perfectly placed to slot home from close range. Notably, Sunderland remain unbeaten in league games this season when they score the first goal.

Lutsharel Geertruida showcased Sunderland’s defensive mettle with a goal-saving tackle, preventing David Brooks from tapping in Jimenez’s cross. Sunderland’s ‘keeper Robin Roefs then produced a superb double save, pushing Marcus Tavernier’s shot out to Alex Scott before scrambling across to block the follow-up effort with his leg.

Diarra should have doubled Sunderland’s lead immediately after the interval, but he shot straight at Roefs from Chemsdine Talbi’s pass.

Bournemouth eventually equalised in the 64th minute when Roefs misjudged Tavernier’s cross, allowing Evanilson to bundle the ball home off his shoulder at the far post. Jimenez drilled a low strike narrowly wide in the closing stages, but Bournemouth ultimately couldn’t find a winner.
