The Etsu Nupe and Chairman, Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers
Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar has charged district heads, community leaders, and village heads to mobilise for peace and stop communal clashes.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the move by the Royal Father was premised on the rising communal clashes within his domain over lands and fish ponds.
In view of the upsurge, the Etsu Nupe convened a meeting with stakeholders yesterday to discuss the causes of clashes and retaliatory attacks in parts of the emirate and to put an end to them.
While urging the communities to embrace peace, tolerance, and mutual understanding, Alhaji Abubakar emphasised that violence only deepened divisions. It destroyed the long-standing peaceful and mutually coexisting relationships among communities.
He stressed that “no grievance justified taking the law into one’s hands, channel your grievances to law enforcement agencies and recognised authorities”.
The Etsu Nupe frowned at the emerging trend of hatred, suspicion and acrimony among neighbouring communities, describing it as a dangerous development capable of destabilising peace and unity in the area.
He specifically charged parents and guardians to take more responsibility in the moral and social upbringing of their children, noting that proper home training would lay a foundation for a peaceful and orderly society.
The Royal Father further enjoined the people to respect constituted authorities and cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and valuable information that could help to prevent criminal activities.
