Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has commended the European Union (EU) for its planned €50 million humanitarian project aimed at supporting Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and vulnerable communities in Adamawa State.
Receiving the EU delegation, led by Ambassador-Designate to Nigeria and ECOWAS Mr Gauthier Mignot, at the Government House in Yola, Governor Fintiri described the initiative as a critical intervention.
He noted that the state government is currently implementing an Action Plan for durable solutions to address the needs of IDPs and foster post-conflict recovery.
“The Action Plan is a comprehensive roadmap to provide essential services, enhance food security, promote social cohesion, and create sustainable livelihoods. The EU’s expertise will be invaluable in achieving these goals,” Fintiri said.
The governor highlighted key areas for collaboration, including improving food security, strengthening livelihoods, enhancing social cohesion, and upgrading basic services.
He also welcomed the EU’s proposed field visits to project sites in Hong, Girei, and Labondo, noting that these visits would deepen their understanding of the state’s challenges and strengthen cooperation.
Earlier, Ambassador Gauthier Mignot disclosed that the EU’s humanitarian project, supported by the German Embassy, focuses on providing social protection for IDPs and the most vulnerable populations in Adamawa.
The initiative is part of the EU’s broader efforts to promote peace, security, and sustainable development, particularly in Nigeria’s Northeast.
The ambassador explained that the project would also support regional programmes on durable solutions, economic recovery, adolescent health, teacher development, and assistance for pastoral and forest communities.
Mr Mignot added that the delegation’s visit to Adamawa aimed to gather firsthand information and understand the state’s dynamics so that EU interventions could effectively align with local needs.
Governor Fintiri expressed gratitude for the EU’s commitment and reaffirmed the state’s readiness to collaborate with the EU to deliver impactful results.
He expressed optimism that the partnership would address the challenges IDPs and vulnerable communities faced, paving the way for a brighter future in Adamawa State.
