Euracare Multispecialist Hospital has denied allegations of medical negligence following the death of the 21-month-old son of renowned author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, describing the claims as inaccurate and unfounded.
The hospital, in a statement issued on Friday, expressed sympathy to the Adichie family over what it described as a “profound and unimaginable loss,” while clarifying the circumstances surrounding the child’s referral and treatment.
According to Euracare, the child was already critically ill before being referred to its facility, having received treatment for more than a week at two paediatric centres prior to arrival. The hospital said the referral was specifically for advanced diagnostic procedures and not for initial or primary care.
It explained that upon presentation, its internationally trained clinical team provided care strictly in line with established clinical protocols and globally accepted medical standards, including the use of medically indicated sedation.
The hospital further disclosed that external medical teams recommended by the family were actively involved in the child’s care and that all necessary clinical support was made available. Despite these efforts, the patient sadly passed away less than 24 hours after presentation at the facility.
Euracare said it has commenced a detailed internal investigation in line with its clinical governance framework and best practices, while pledging full cooperation with any regulatory or independent clinical review processes.
Reaffirming its commitment to transparency, compassion, and patient safety, the hospital stated that it remains deeply mindful of the family’s grief and will continue to offer support while due process takes its course.
“As medical professionals, we carry the weight of this loss deeply,” the statement added.
