Everton have formally filed an appeal against their second points deduction for violating the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

The Toffees received a second punishment last week after admitting a £16.6 million violation for the three-year cycle till the 2022–23 season. Earlier this season, they were punished with a ten-point deduction, which was later reduced to a six-point deduction for violating PSR regulations during the evaluation period before the 2021–22 season. The news of the official appeal being lodged by Everton was announced by the BBC.

According to an independent panel, Everton violated the profit and sustainability regulations (PSR) by £16.6 million during the three years leading up to 2022–2023 — a limit that allows teams to lose up to £105 million over three years, which was the reason why they have been handed the second deduction. They currently sit in 16th place in the Premier League, just two points clear of the relegation zone.

The Merseyside team may still lose points due to interest expenses incurred in the construction of their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, although it is unlikely that this matter will be settled before the end of the season.

The hearing for the second appeal will have to be concluded by May 24 at the latest, which will be five days after the end of the Premier League. Everton will be in action later tonight when they travel to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea.
