Former Nigerian international striker, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, has spoken candidly about his profound love for Everton, describing his transfer to Goodison Park as a pivotal moment in his career.
Between 2007 and 2011, “The Yak,” as he was affectionately known, scored 33 goals in 107 appearances for the Toffees, including 25 in the Premier League. However, in a recent interview with Everton’s official website, he emphasised that his connection with the supporters held equal significance.
“The welcome from the fans meant so much to me,” Aiyegbeni stated. “I was with my daughter, and for her to witness the fans and see that they still love me is an unforgettable experience. It’s truly lovely to see people remember the positive contributions I made to the Club.”
He continued: “Signing for Everton was a magnificent moment. I fell in love from day one. It’s a special club. We refer to it as ‘The People’s Club.’ The fans are incredibly friendly. Their welcome was so special. Even now, I remain a supporter. I simply adore the place.”
Reflecting on his tenure on Merseyside, Yakubu believes he showcased his finest form whilst wearing an Everton shirt. “Coming all the way from Boro, scoring goals and playing in Europe – it was a fantastic atmosphere, and those are cherished memories. Goodison Park back then – we created lasting memories. The club will always be special to me. I believe I played my best football here.”
