The former husband of ex-United States’ First Lady Jill Biden has been arrested and charged with murder following the death of his current wife at their Delaware home in December, police said on Tuesday.
William Stevenson, 77, who was married to Jill Biden from 1970 until their divorce in 1975, is facing a first-degree murder charge over the death of his wife, 64-year-old Linda Stevenson. Jill Biden later married former US President Joe Biden in 1977.
According to the New Castle County Police Department, Linda Stevenson was found unresponsive in the living room of the couple’s Wilmington home on December 28 after officers responded to a report of a domestic dispute shortly after 11:00 p.m. (0400 GMT).
Police said life-saving efforts were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Stevenson was arrested on Monday and remains in custody after failing to meet $500,000 cash bail.
Authorities have not disclosed the cause of Linda Stevenson’s death or provided further details about the ongoing investigation.
In her obituary, Linda Stevenson was described as deeply family-oriented, cherishing time spent creating memories, particularly during family vacations with her daughter and granddaughter. She was a devoted Philadelphia Eagles fan and recently operated a bookkeeping business.
She was remembered as “tenacious, kind-hearted, and fiercely loyal,” with her family noting that her strength, resilience, and unwavering love would leave a lasting impact on all who knew her.
