Former Nigerian international Waidi Akanni has expressed optimism about the Super Eagles’ chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, provided the team maintains consistent performances in the upcoming playoff matches.

Nigeria finished second in their qualifying group after a commanding 4-0 win over Benin Republic, trailing group leaders South Africa by just one point. This outcome places Nigeria among the top runners-up who now must advance through the CAF playoffs for a chance to secure a World Cup spot in 2026.

Speaking after the final of the 1XCUP grassroots competition at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos, Akanni emphasised the importance of consistency. He said, “Well, I’ll be honest, they (Super Eagles) haven’t been consistent, and that’s the problem. If they can be consistent in the next three matches, why not? In football, nothing is certain until the last minute. I’m hopeful because it’s all about taking one game at a time.”

Regarding the national team coach’s performance, Akanni advocated for continuity. “Most definitely, I think he should continue. He has brought in young and new players, giving chances even to those not initially expected to start. That shows progress,” Akanni added.

Meanwhile, Ikorodu City Football Academy emerged champions of the 2025 1XCUP grassroots tournament after a tightly contested 1-0 victory against ISAGT Athletic. They received a N10 million cash prize for their achievement and ISAGTAthletic took home N5million. In the third-place match, Dosu Joseph FC staged an impressive second-half comeback to defeat Nath Boys 2-1 and claimed N3 million.

Akanni, also CEO of Match International Ltd, underscored the importance of grassroots competitions for Nigerian football development. “This is exactly what Nigeria needs,” he noted. “We have many teams eager to participate, and these platforms nurture homegrown talent. We don’t always have to depend on foreign-based players. Grassroots football is essential for the future, and this tournament will produce outstanding players.”
