Former Governor of Plateau State, Senator Jonah Jang, has stressed the urgent need for State Police, noting its potential to enhance security, ensure rapid response to crises, and effectively tackle insecurity challenges head-on.

He also called for immediate action in response to the recent Christmas Eve killings in Barki Ladi and Bokkos Local Government Areas (LGAs), which resulted in over 200 deaths and the displacement of thousands.

In a statement released in Jos by his media consultant, Comrade Clinton Garuba, Senator Jang stressed the necessity for state governors to possess the authority to swiftly deploy security personnel during attacks and counteracts against marauding terrorists.

“The escalating killings demand immediate action, and the establishment of State Police is crucial to curbing these massacres. Empowering States to create, train, and equip their police force will enable Governors to effectively handle security challenges in their respective states,” Senator Jang asserted.

He urged the Federal Government to heed the call for state policing and implored the National Assembly to prioritise this urgent matter in the interest of the people of Plateau State.

“The continuous bloodshed is intolerable, and our citizens should be able to reside in their homes and cultivate their lands without fear of unwarranted attacks. These despicable acts have disrupted the peace that our beloved state has enjoyed,” he stated.

Senator Jang condemned the barbaric attack on innocent villagers during the festive period, stressing the need for immediate measures to halt the cycle of violence and bring peace back to Plateau State.

He expressed concern over the ongoing atrocities, stressing that the failure to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators has emboldened them to carry out more heinous acts.

He noted the plight of villagers in various LGAs targeted by terrorists, emphasising the need for concerted efforts to halt these attacks and restore the state’s once serene and peaceful environment.
