A former member of the House of Representatives, Hon Ogbonna Nwuke, has kicked against the clamour by some members of the National Assembly for the country to return to parliamentary system of government.

Nwuke, who is a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), disclosed this in an interview with LEADERSHIP Weekend in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

He stated that those pushing for the return of the country from presidential system of government to parliamentary system, may not have some historical perspective on what had happened in the country during the era of parliamentary system of government.

The former federal lawmaker insisted that returning to parliamentary system of government will not solve the problem of the country.

“I think we should be wary of presenting ourselves as laughing stock before the international community by the utterances and actions that we take as a people.

“Many years back when we got independence, we operated parliamentary system and we blamed the parliamentary system for laying emphasis on the regional level and weakening the centre. You will recall that all these crises led to a civil war in this country,” he said.
