Former Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has survived a ghastly road accident in Lagos.
The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner disclosed the incident on Sunday through a post on his Instagram page, where he shared footage showing severe damage to the front of his SUV. According to Onazi, the collision was caused by another vehicle allegedly driven by two intoxicated occupants.
Shaken by the experience, the former Lazio and Trabzonspor player condemned the rising cases of drunk driving in Lagos and urged authorities to enforce stricter measures to curb the menace.
“I almost lost my life last night because of two drunk guys in a car. The government must urgently address drunk driving in Lagos,” he wrote.
The crash occurred shortly after Onazi marked his birthday, an occasion that drew congratulatory messages and tributes from prominent figures in Nigerian football, including former Super Eagles captain Vincent Enyeama and former Premier League striker Peter Odemwingie.
Onazi’s experience has reignited concerns over road safety in Lagos State, as reckless and alcohol-impaired driving continued to endanger lives on the state’s busy roads.
