A water expert and the president, Opubo Technologies Nigeria Limited, Augustus Jaja, has stressed the need to address the challenges posed by indiscriminate drilling of boreholes and its effects in the country.
Jaja stated this while speaking with LEADERSHIP on the growing number of boreholes in urban centres and its effects.
The water technician, based in the United States of America, said he has the capability and expertise to bring solutions to water problems in Nigeria.
On the dangers of the growing number of boreholes in the country, he said; “It does have an effect because we have a specific amount of water in the world.
“Only drinking water is about three percent so water we use today you have to recycle it over the years for another person to use it.
“So having those boreholes affects human health. For instance, we look at the particular compound, they have a borehole here, then next to it about 20 metres there is a soakaway.
“So, if the government will be able to know and register every other borehole as done in other countries, you will know where that borehole is located, where you have a soakaway for minimal few, then the government will be able to render services.”
“Government cannot solve all the problems. Even in the United States, the government cannot solve all the problems. All the government does is guarantee funding for solutions to the problems. The government can’t do it without partnerships and the indigenous people,” he added.
