Experts Fear Ukraine War May Worsen Insecurity In Nigeria

The Ukrainian war may seem distant from everyday life in Nigeria, but security experts have warned that its ripple effects may soon be felt closer home.

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Ukraine has received a significant share of global arms imports in recent years, with at least 36 countries supplying weapons.

While these arms are intended for war, history suggests that not all of them will remain accounted for.

The Interpol has already raised the alarm; once the intensity of the conflict decreases, surplus weapons could leak into global black markets.

A security analyst, Okwudili Dialoke, expressed fear that Nigeria’s history already shows how conflicts, even those beyond its borders, can shape its internal security.

Since the colonial era, when European powers carved up Africa without regard for ethnic or cultural boundaries, many countries, including Nigeria, have faced recurring tensions driven by political, economic, and ethno-religious divisions.

These tensions often create fertile ground for armed groups, who rely on a steady flow of weapons to sustain their activities.

Reports indicate that terrorist groups in Nigeria have evolved in their tactics, now deploying improvised explosive devices and even drones against security forces.

This shift signals not just local ingenuity, but also access to increasingly sophisticated weaponry, often sourced through illegal global networks.

The concern now is what will happen when the war in Ukraine slows or ends.

For regions like West Africa, where border controls are often porous and enforcement capacity is stretched, this poses a serious risk.

For instance, after the collapse of the Libyan Civil War, weapons from Libya spread across the Sahel and into Nigeria, strengthening insurgent and criminal groups for years.

That experience remains a stark warning of how quickly distant wars can destabilise entire regions.

If a similar wave of arms proliferation follows the Ukraine conflict, Nigeria could face a renewed surge in illegal weapons entering the country.

This may not only embolden terrorist groups but also complicate efforts by security agencies already battling insurgency, banditry, and organised crime.

The issue, therefore, is not whether the Ukraine war directly targets Nigeria, but whether its aftermath may quietly reshape the country’s security landscape.

For security experts, it was time for the federal government to strengthen border controls, improve intelligence-sharing, and tighten arms-monitoring systems to contain any escalation.
