Experts Urge Protection Of Human Rights In Nigeria

Experts at a distinguished Leadership Series have called for respect and protection of human rights in Nigeria.

The Series was organised by the Abuja Leadership Center (ACL), a TETFund Centre of Excellence in Public Governance and Leadership with the “Human Rights,”

 

Speaking, the director of the Centre, Professor Philip Afaha said Nigeria as a country is not immune from the problem of human rights.

He said, “I Know of human rights issues every year across the country, in state and local governments. It is a major problem, not only in Africa but in Nigeria.

 

“So when the Ombudsman of the Republic of Venezuela brought the idea of coming to speak to the students and youths community on the aspect of human rights, we felt this is the right time for our students who are just returning from ASUU strike to know about their rights and expectations from government.

 

“If there’s any issue Nigerians needs to listen to more, especially as we are approaching election is the issue of human rights,” he said.

 

The Vice-Chancellor of University of Abuja Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, commended Afaha for keeping the objectives of the University through the Leadership Centre.

 

Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Professor Abubakar Sadeeque Abba, the Na’Allah the the event will go a long way in creating opportunities for students to broaden their knowledge.

 

“Today, the world is going global and Nigeria need partners internationally and what we are doing here today is a step aimed at enhancing the partnership between Venezuela and Nigeria.”

 

The guest speaker, Ombudsman of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Alfredo Ruiz Angulo ensuring human rights entails a core responsibility between the states, families and persons involved.

 

He said one of the important things Venezuela has done is that each and every person is made to fight the I’ll and advocate human rights, not just the institutions.

 

On his part, the Ambassador of Venezuela to Nigeria, His Excellency, David Velasques Caraballo said the Programme was part the partnership between the university of Abuja and the Embassy.

 

He said the Embassy is working with the Human Rights Commission of Nigeria to establish the bilateral co-operation for training and develop mechanism to learn from each other.
