The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a man identified as Moferewa Maiye for allegedly impersonating personnel of the Service and using a tactical uniform and fake pistol to intimidate and extort motorists in Abuja.

Maiye was arrested by DSS operatives at his hideout around NITEL Junction, along Adetokunbo Ademola Way, Wuse II, Abuja, following credible intelligence received by the Service.

At the time of his arrest, the suspect was reportedly dressed in a DSS tactical uniform and had a fake pistol in his possession.

A security source said preliminary findings indicated that Maiye allegedly used the uniform and weapon to intimidate commuters and motorists and extort money from them.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly claimed that his late brother, identified as Monday Maiye, was a DSS personnel who died several years ago. He allegedly told investigators that the DSS uniform and other items recovered from him belonged to his late brother.

The Service, however, is investigating how the suspect came into possession of the uniform and other operational-looking items, as well as how long he may have been involved in the alleged impersonation and extortion.

“Investigators are also trying to establish how long the suspect has been involved in similar acts of impersonation and extortion,” the source said.

The arrest, according to the source, highlights the DSS’ growing concern over individuals who impersonate security personnel to intimidate members of the public and perpetrate criminal activities.

Meanwhile, LEADERSHIP learnt that the suspect will remain in DSS custody while investigations continue to determine the full extent of his activities and whether other persons may have been involved.
