The Arewa Renaissance Group has raised concerns over what it described as a coordinated plan by some journalists to publish false and damaging reports aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the minister of state for Works, Muhammad Bello Goronyo.
Addressing reporters in Abuja, the group’s coordinator, Abba Usman, revealed that an intelligence report uncovered a plot involving a former journalist from a well-known online platform working in collaboration with another reporter to fabricate misleading stories about the minister.
Usman warned the public to be vigilant and disregard any such reports if they surface.
“This plot is not only malicious but a clear attempt to undermine the credibility of a patriotic and reputable Nigerian who has consistently demonstrated integrity in public service,” Usman said.
He added that from his time as a member of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, to serving as commissioner, and now as minister of state for Works, Goronyo has remained committed to national development.
The group called on journalists to adhere to professional standards by conducting thorough investigations before publishing sensitive reports.
“The press has a critical role to play in society, and it is disappointing to see some individuals exploiting it for personal agendas,” Usman added.
This development comes amid recent media controversies, including ongoing criticism of the Inspector General of Police by certain activists.
The Arewa Renaissance Group expressed concern that a pattern of targeted attacks on public officials is emerging.
“We urge all Nigerians to see through these plots and focus on facts, not fabricated stories,” Usman said, emphasizing that the group will continue monitoring the situation to ensure that the minister’s integrity is protected.
