The announcement of Lionel Messi’s retirement from international football has triggered an outpouring of emotion from Nigerian fans and supporters across the world, with social media platforms flooded with tributes to one of football’s greatest-ever players.

In Nigeria, the news quickly generated emotional reactions on Nairaland, one of the country’s largest online forums, as supporters reflected on the end of Messi’s remarkable 21-year international career.
“This is the saddest day in soccer history,” one user wrote, while another simply described Messi as “the GOAT”.

Others paid tribute to the Argentina captain with messages including, “Best of luck, champ!” and “You’ve completed football… Wishing you a happy retirement.”

On X, Nigerian user @SemiNigerian defended Messi following Argentina’s defeat by Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, arguing that the veteran forward’s emotional reaction was about more than the result.
“Messi wasn’t crying because Argentina lost to Spain, he got emotional because of what his people were saying to him, that’s his last World Cup appearance,” the user wrote.

Another Nigerian fan highlighted Messi’s age at retirement, joking: “Here’s a man retiring at 39, the age when most Nigerians are yet to start their careers.”
‘Thank You, Captain’

In Argentina, the reaction was deeply emotional, with supporters filling Messi’s social media pages with messages of gratitude and affection.

“Te amo eternamente, capitán” — “I love you eternally, captain” — and “Gracias por todo” — “Thank you for everything” — were among the messages posted by fans.

One supporter wrote: “Today the heart hurts. But his legacy will be eternal. Thank you, 10.”
Another fan jokingly vowed to fight to prevent Messi from leaving the international stage, describing him as a “heritage of humanity”.

The emotional response was not restricted to Argentina.

In Brazil, where the football rivalry with Argentina is intense, some supporters used humour to react to Messi’s retirement, with one fan declaring that “Argentina will never be champion again”, while another joked about another lengthy wait for Argentina’s next World Cup triumph.

In the United Kingdom, supporters largely celebrated Messi’s extraordinary career while acknowledging that his retirement had become inevitable.

“Expected, but what a career he’s had. Really glad he got his World Cup,” one British supporter wrote.

Major British media outlets also reflected on the significance of Messi’s departure, describing the end of an extraordinary era in modern football.

Fans from Arabic-speaking countries similarly expressed their gratitude, with one supporter writing: “Thank you very much, I will never tire of thanking you for making me happy.”

In India, social media was also filled with tributes celebrating Messi as one of the country’s most admired sporting icons.

The reaction extended beyond individual supporters, with FIFA also paying tribute to the Argentine great, posting a simple message: “Congratulations on a great career.”

Messi’s Instagram announcement rapidly attracted millions of likes and hundreds of thousands of comments, underlining the global reach of a player whose career transcended club and national boundaries.

After 21 years, 207 international appearances, 125 goals and a World Cup triumph, Messi’s Argentina chapter has finally closed.
