Enugu State governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and the minister of works and housing, Babatunde Fashola, have commissioned 254 housing units built in the state and financed by the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN).
In his speech at the inauguration of the I-Connect Investment Cooperative Society Limited Housing Estate Project in Trans-Ekulu in Enugu, Fashola said the new houses brought the number of units built by the Muhammadu Buhari administration in the state to over 1,520 in nine projects.
“The 254 housing units here are very symbolic. It’s a symbol of so many things that are going on in the housing sector. It is part of a 404 housing unit estate which has been completed.
“It symbolises a small part as a part of a larger part. Even the 404 is also part of a larger part of 1520 housing units in nine projects.
“So, one state, one bank and there are nine projects in Enugu State, “he stated
The minister said the federal government under President Muhammadu Buhari has done so much to reduce the poverty level in the country by providing houses to several Nigerians
“When you talk about solving problems such as poverty, there’s nothing more defining as shelter. And that is a measure of prosperity.
“You have moved from becoming a dependent for shelter to persons who are now reasonably self-sufficient.
“There are many other people apart from homeowners, such as architects, surveyors, construction companies, artisans and suppliers and transporters,” he stated.
Also, Ugwuanyi expressed deep appreciation to the federal government on what it has been doing in Southeast such as the second Niger Bridge, Enugu-Onitsha Road among other projects.
The governor, represented by his deputy, Mrs. Cecelia Ezeilo, noted that the state government was doing a lot on road projects in the area to ensure the residents had good access roads.
“The state provided an access road and two other housing projects around here. I want to thank the FMBN and its partners for making these houses available for the people”, the governor said.
The managing director of the FMBN, Madu Hamman who was represented by the executive director, loans and mortgage services, Lukman Mustapha, said the successful delivery of the project had shown that the Cooperative Housing initiative developed by the bank could be a game changer in the bank’s efforts at tackling the housing shortage facing Nigerians.
