After about 10 years of prosecution, the long arm of the law has finally caught up with a father, one Okon Jimmy Ama, for raping and assaulting his two biological daughters, ages 13 and 16.

The convict, a commercial driver and mechanic, hails from Ikot Ekop village in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

He was sentenced to a combined 24 years’ imprisonment for incest, rape and assault.

The 51-year-old was sentenced by the Akwa Ibom State High Court, Uyo, headed by Justice Winifred Effiong.

The particulars of the case recalled that the incident occurred in 2015, “when Ama repeatedly molested his daughters, aged 13 and 16, by having carnal knowledge of them severally.”

Evidence presented revealed that he also used a car fan belt to beat one of his daughters and later disposed of the evidence in a pit toilet.

Justice Effiong, therefore, convicted Ama on all counts – sentencing him to seven years’ imprisonment on counts 1 and 2 for incest by male, 3 years for assault occasioning bodily harm and 14 years for rape, holding that “the sentences are to run concurrently.”

The prosecuting counsel from the State Ministry of Justice, Ofonime Idio, described the judgment as “a strong statement against sexual abuse and a victory for justice in the state.”
