Fatima Bala: The Woman Writing Northern Stories Differently

There is something quietly daring about the way Fatima Bala writes. She takes love, faith, family and the expectations placed on women, then goes looking for the uncomfortable spaces between them.

Born in Kaduna, Bala is a lecturer, poet and writer whose work is increasingly carving out a distinctive place in contemporary Nigerian literature. Now living between Nigeria and Canada with her husband and children, she has made the complexities of Northern Nigerian life central to her storytelling.

Her breakout novel, Broken: Not a Halal Love Story, introduced many readers to that world. Published by Masobe Books in 2024, it follows Fa’iza Mohammed and Ahmad Babangida as they navigate attraction alongside faith, family expectations and the boundaries between what is permitted and forbidden. It is a romance, certainly, but Bala uses love to ask bigger questions about identity, religion, culture and the different standards society sometimes sets for men and women.

Then came Hafsatu Bebi, a sweeping story spanning decades and three cities. At its centre is Hafsatu, a young Abuja fashion entrepreneur whose seemingly ordered life is disrupted by a family secret rooted in a love story that began before she was born.

But Bala’s latest work may be her boldest yet.

Released on July 23, 2026, The Lies We Tell is a 260-page collection of stories set largely in Northern Nigeria. From Zaria’s dye pits to Abuja rooftops, matrimonial homes, motor parks and hostels, Bala turns her attention to Hausa women and the complicated bargains people make with love, silence, family and themselves.

What makes Bala interesting is that she does not appear interested in presenting Northern Nigerian women as one thing. Her women love. They desire. They obey. They question. They make mistakes. They carry family histories and negotiate the sometimes difficult meeting point between personal choice and communal expectation.

That complexity is deliberate. Bala has spoken about the importance of Arewa stories and about her own experience of being Hausa in the diaspora, where culture, faith and community continue to shape identity.

And perhaps that explains why her fiction feels intimate. She isn’t merely writing about the North as a setting. She is writing from within its conversations—the ones about love and marriage, mothers and daughters, religion, reputation, duty and the ever-watchful presence of family.
