The newly – appointed commissioner of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Dr. Eunice Thomas, has underscored the importance of repositioning the Commission to reflect its mission of uniting Nigeria along the line of equity and unity of purpose.
She, therefore, promised to leverage her office to promote national unity by ensure equitable distribution of opportunities among Nigerians.
Speaking at her inaugural meeting with the staff of the Commission at Uyo, Akwa Ibom office, along Dr. Thomas emphasised the importance of implementing the federal character principles to give every Nigerian collective sense of national entitlement.
“If we try enough to implement the federal character principles, I think that Nigeria will be united because every Nigerian will be owning a piece of Nigeria,” she noted
She also warned against vote buying and selling, reminding the electorates that, “campaigns will soon start, don’t buy and don’t sell votes or you will go to jail.”
Dr. Thomas assured staff of the FCC of her commitment to improving their welfare, and motivating them to deliver results, vowing that “your welfare is primary to me, I will make it my business to ensure that your welfare is improved.”
She, therefore, expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, Senator Godswill Akpabio and Governor Umo Eno, for her appointment, pledged to rebrand the FCC and restore trust among Nigerians.
“We are going to rebrand the FCC and do our honest service to the people,” she maintained, and called on staff to be diligent and transparent, emphasising that, “the development of Nigeria is in this office, so every file that passes by your table holds the future, fate, and belief of a Nigerian.”
Responding, the state director, Chukwudi Christopher, congratulated her on her appointment and applauded her experience, ingenuity and influence as essential values that would drive the reforms under her watch.
Christopher, who was posted to Akwa Ibom State about a week ago, expressed delight that Mrs. Thomas, made him felt at home in the State, recalling that “through your contact, I have been able to settle here without any stress. You are an asset to us here.”
The director also commended Thomas’ political track – record, stating that the Commission would leverage on her influence to overcome challenges and pledged the staff’s loyalty, assuring that “our loyalty is not questionable; we are ready to work with you.”
One of the suggestions made by Christopher was the installation of a signage at the office to increase visibility, as many neighbours were unaware of the Commission’s presence.
He expressed optimism that Thomas, who has served as a commissioner back-to-back in the state, is expected to bring her experience to bear in her new role.
Also speaking, the director of administration, Akpan James, among other staff workers, pledged their commitment to service and work towards the progress of the Commission.
