Residents of Bauchi State have expressed frustration over what they describe as exploitative and unreliable electricity services, with the power sector now topping the list of consumer complaints in the region.
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has also revealed a steady influx of grievances tied to electricity billing and service delivery. From arbitrary charges to the controversial practice of estimated billing, consumers say they are being left in the dark—both literally and financially.
Speaking to journalists, FCCPC’s head of Public Enlightenment, Adamu Muhammad Bello, described the situation as alarming.
According to him, the electricity sector accounts for the highest volume of complaints received by the commission in Bauchi State.
“These complaints largely center on unfair billing practices and inadequate service,” Bello noted, emphasising that the commission is working to hold service providers accountable and protect consumers from exploitation.
Echoing these concerns, the FCCPC’s North-East zonal head, Jannet Udom, called on the residents to speak up.
She urged consumers to report cases of extortion, poor service, and other irregularities, assuring that prompt action would follow.
The commission stressed that public participation is crucial in cleaning up the sector. By reporting abuses, residents can help drive transparency and ensure electricity providers deliver the quality service they are mandated to provide.
While complaints continue to mount, pressure is building on electricity companies to address systemic issues, or risk further regulatory scrutiny in a sector already under intense public dissatisfaction.
